Minor and Major scales
We've spent the past few weeks studying our major and minor scales. Last year I had to physically look at the scales in order to play them, however, after spending a bit of time on just a few of the scales I am able to play them from memory. We've gone into a lot more depth about the scales and i've finally realized just how easy it is to memorize them. As long as I memorize the major scales it's easier for me to play the minor scales. There really isn't a huge trick to memorizing them other than just to keep practicing and studying all of your major and minor scales. I never used to put the effort in when I was younger, but I grew up to really enjoy learning about and playing music. As I continue my last year in high school band we will learn the rest of the major and minor scales that we have yet to talk about and I know for sure that I will have them all memorized, working as hard as necessary.
To find your minor scale you find the 6th note of your major scale and that becomes your new tonic. You keep the same key signature as well. As long as you know your major scale you should easily be able to find your relative minor scale.
We have a quiz on our major and minor scales in the upcoming week and I know i'll most likely receive an A. I've worked extremely hard over the past two years trying to catch up on all of the things I missed in band because I was young, stupid, and didn't take the class seriously. It was too hard for me and I decided I didn't need to pay attention because I would never understand it anyways. However, last year it hit me really hard and I realized that I CAN do it and it's really not that hard as long as I put in the effort and study. I've spent the year so far studying all of my scales and looking deeper into music than I ever have before. I've practiced playing and reciting them to myself at home and at school as well. I turn my stand around in class so I don't feel tempted to look at my scales; it's an easier way for me to remember them. By the end of the year I know that I will have every single scale down by heart and i'll be able to play them without any hesitation at all.
