AP: Chapter 1 - Pitch
In the very first chapter I have learned how to sing and match pitch within our voices, how to understand octaves, and how to read the alto and tenor clef. On the very first day of class I was very anxious to begin learning; I figured it would be fairly difficult. After reviewing the first chapter, i've come to the conclusion that it's not that bad so far. This chapter seemed like more of a review from band than anything. The only things new I learned from this first chapter was how to read the tenor and alto clef and how to tell what octave a note was in. It did take me just a little while to understand the alto and tenor clefs, though. However, the hardest part of the chapter was maybe learning how to tell what octave a note was in because I had never really read anything like that before. Now that we've had practice with it and have completed the very first chapter, it's not very difficult and I now know what I am doing.
In this chapter I felt as if it wasn't anything relatively new to me; I had a small portion of knowledge about most of the material already. The only thing I actually really dreaded was singing in by myself or singing with a group of people. I can sing by myself (I don't actually sound too bad) but when i'm in front of a group of people I get anxious and my voice begins to crack and become shaky from it. After singing the past few classes it's definitely not as hard or as terrifying as I thought it would be. It's becoming easier to hear the pitch in everyone's voices and to attempt to match mine to it as well. Something I really struggled with was counting. I never listened in middle school because I didn't think I needed to and I thought I could just wing it, however, that didn't work out too well for me. It's still somewhat hard for me to count music, but after this first chapter i'm slowly getting the hang of it and it's not as hard as I also thought it was. I just never used to put the effort nor the time into it because I didn't understand it; I would just get frustrated and give up on it. I'm glad i've been studying how to this year because i'm beginning to understand it a lot more.
