Pep band relfection
My Commitment
I performed at all of the pep band games this year except for just a few of the volunteer games. Those were typically on Tuesdays and my manager has me work every Tuesday. I am a supervisor so it is a lot harder for me to get days off to attend pep band, but I always worked it out with my boss and was able to make it to the games. I do believe I earned an A in pep band because I did make it to all of the games except two volunteer games I believe. I always played my best and made sure I was on time to play next, which wasn't hard because I usually stayed to watch the game in between playing time anyways.
Is Pep Band Important?
I do believe that pep band is a VERY important element of Newark Band. It gets the kids to get out of their house and enjoy a basketball game with their friends FOR FREE. I see it as extra practice time for myself as well. There's always room for improvement and learning and playing pep band songs constantly is a great way to practice and become better than we already are. Pep band gets the students and the crowd involved in the game. It's a way for the crowd to enjoy some music in between playing time and a way for us to support our team.
Top 3 Favorite Songs?
1- Crazy Train - I LOVE rock and I love the tempo and amount of notes I get to play in this song. I love the way it moves and sounds as a whole. I believe the clarinets are a key part to this song as well. I think our part sounds so cool and our range gets decently high, filling in the more quiet and slow parts.
2- Lady Gaga - This is basically a clarinet piece to me and i've loved playing this song since freshmen year, despite what the rest of the group says. We have such a high and low range. The piece starts out very low and gradually gets higher for the clarinets. I think the song sounds better being played as a band than the original song does actually being sung by her. It's one of the first songs I played in pep band and that's one of the many reasons why I love the song.
3- Wipe Out - I love love LOVE the way this piece starts out with 4 measures of drums and then we get right into it. I honestly just think the band as a whole plays this song really well. We added the measures that were crosses out this year as well, and added a few measures with the melody in the beginning for the clarinets. To me, this is a fairly easy song to play and I've loved the way it sounds since freshmen year.
3 Least Favorite Songs?
1- Frozen - I've always had a strong hatred for the movie Frozen, even though i've never even seen it. It just looks and sounds extremely annoying to me. This piece doesn't sound terrible either, It's mostly just the fact that I despise the movie and I think the songs from the movie are annoying. I think Frozen is way too overrated.
2- Scooby Doo - This song sounds really boring and a bit too childish for a high school pep band (in a non rude way). I think it's way too slow and there isn't that much to play either. It just seems way too plain for pep band. We need more rowdier songs.
3- Rubber Ducky - I do like this piece, however, I think it's way too short and a bit too boring for pep band. Like I stated above we need rowdy songs that make the crowd want to get involved. But in the same sense, I understand why we play it and when we do. I just picked this song because I really don't have that many songs I don't like in pep band, expect for the above two.
Wipe Out
I don't have a specific measure that I improved on in this song, it was pretty much the whole song for me. My first two years of pep band I would kind of fake play this song because it was too confusing and fast for me. Last year I slowly learned how to play this piece the more we practiced it, and this year I got it 100% down. We even added some tougher parts for the clarinets, but i've improved over the past two years as a band student so it was a lot easier for me to pick up on as well. Overall, i've improved my performance on this entire song.
