Smart Music
When we first started using Smart Music I absolutely despised it. I was so afraid to play my clarinet alone and have it recorded. Over the first few months of using it though, I began to really love it. It was a way for me to practice my instrument without feeling judged and I could try again until I was comfortable with the score I had received. The app informs you what notes you played wrong or anything else that you made a mistake on. It's a lot less stressful than just playing to your band director one on one and receiving a grade, which is how my freshmen year went. I get excited when we are assigned a new task on Smart Music because I go in sometimes not knowing what I will be playing and then seeing how well I can play my instrument after sight reading for a few minutes. You can also slow the tempo down if necessary and take practice rounds to see how well you will do on the piece. Overall though, I believe that Smart Music is a wonderful app that allows students to view their progress in playing their instruments over the course of the school year and teach them what they are doing wrong and how to correct their mistakes.
The last time we did Smart Music, I received a 79% as my baseline score. That's just by sight reading and playing without any practice, which isn't too bad in my opinion. I gave it one shot and then I turned it in.
I think Smart Music should continue to be used in place of just playing to the teacher. I feel like this program is a bit stricter and maybe a little harder on the students, but it's more helpful because it's teaching you to improve and telling you how to. The app even counts you off before you begin and allows you to sight read it as well. For me, I sight read it, take at least one or two practice rounds, and then attempt to do the actual and last round of my performance. If it's extremely awful I will maybe attempt it three times or more depending on the score I received and how content I am with it. So far this year we've only had to complete one lesson on Smart Music and since it's my last and final year in band my goal is to get a 90 or higher on all of the assignments, which I know for sure I can do.
