what i learned from chapter one and two
So far i've learned how to sing and match the pitch in my voice to the rest of the class. Although we haven't even made it that far with singing, we have had quite a bit of practice with it. It's helping me overcome my fear of singing in front of people as well as being able to hear and match the sound, or pitch, of my voice to others in the classroom. I'm also starting to understand how to count, which is something i've always struggled with but i've been working on. I learned how conduct as well, which isn't as hard as I thought it was, but we just learned the basics of it.
I've also learned where to place bar lines and how to count measures. That's something that I always struggled with but i'm slowly getting better at. I've been studying how to count over the course of the semester so far and i'm beginning to understand it with the help of a few friends as well. I know that it's going to take some time, but it will eventually easily come to me.
Lastly, I learned how to read a c clef, tenor clef, and alto clef. At first I thought it'd be extremely hard to have to learn new clefs. I had never even seen a tenor or alto clef, but after taking a quiz and studying the clefs for a while I picked up on a few tricks to remember them and it suddenly became much easier. For example, to remember the c clef I say "All Cows Eat Grass" for A C E G and then I can easily place any other notes on the staff. This is probably the easiest thing i've learned this whole chapter because of band class. I already know how to read most of the clefs and I knew the little tricks when It came to figuring out the notes. I can definitely read the clefs a lot easier after this chapter though.
I think my biggest weakness so far is still counting. I can easily do it in class when we do it together, but when I am required to count on my own I just can't seem to do it. It's not even something that's extremely difficult, but it causes me to trip up. It's something that I'm still working on as much as possible and I know i'll have it down soon enough. Slacking in middle school really messed me up when it came to high school band; I was far more behind than the other kids. Over the course of the past two years though, i've attempted to get myself up to speed and I think i've done a fairly good job at that. I will continue to ask for help and work hard to overcome this weakness and to accomplish my goal of being able to count without a single problem.
