Band: Strengths and Weaknesses/Goals
Some of my goals for band this year would include being able to read music even better than I think I already can, improve my solo and ensemble score, and be able to become a better musician overall. To accomplish these goals, I plan to practice as much as I can. I've come to really love music and I even plan on learning how to play the ukulele as soon as possible. I also really want to be able to count music better. I will not deny that I used to fake counting, but after being in AP music theory for a little less than a month and band since 5th grade, I've definitely come to understand counting better, but I do still have some issues with it. Every time I think I begin to understand how to count and I attempt it on my own, I realize that i'm still doing it wrong. So my biggest goal of the year is to ask for help with counting and to be able to do it without a problem anymore.
My strengths in band would include being able to read my music very well, such as notes and dynamic markings. Because I am able to read my music fairly well, it's easier for me to learn the new songs we are given in class and takes me less time to understand the material than the younger kids in band. Recently, I have been googling music on the internet, such as popular hit songs on the radio, and trying to learn them myself. I write on my music a lot more than I used to, informing myself how to play a certain note or not to forgot about certain dynamic markings. Doing that has helped me improve the way that I read music and allowed me to focus more on how and what i'm playing, instead of trying to figure out what notes are in the whole piece like I used to do in middle school when I didn't pay attention and had absolutely no idea what I was doing.
One of my weaknesses would definitely include counting as previously stated. I've always been pretty terrible at this, however, I am currently enrolled in AP music theory and it has significantly improved my counting ability. It's slowly becoming a strength of mine instead of a weakness. The more we learn about it the more I understand and the easier it becomes for me. The reason I used to fake counting is because I unfortunately didn't pay much attention in middle school band. I've always had an interest in music, although, it really sparked my junior year. Music has become a huge part of my life and I couldn't be happier to be a part of band class and be able to accomplish all of the goals I have set for myself this year; turning my weaknesses into strengths.
